The Challenge

Building the Plane While Flying It

NS55 marked 55 years of National Service with a multimedia public exhibition. As design lead, I delivered five digital experiences in 3 months, adapting to evolving content and concepts. I partnered with the main contractor and military stakeholders, using rapid prototyping to align approvals and ensure a cohesive, engaging showcase.

The core challenge
How might we deliver five multimedia experiences quickly with evolving content and multiple stakeholders, while keeping creative cohesion?
The Solution

Structured Agility in Action

I front-loaded key decisions on content, flow, and design to enable efficient task delegation. This allowed parallel progress across five touchpoints while I focused on shaping new stations and guiding the team to maintain creative alignment.

My Role

Design Lead

As design lead (1of4), I set the multimedia direction while staying hands-on with UX and UI. I guided a team across graphic, motion, and 3D design. By defining flows, wireframes, and visuals early, I enabled parallel work and kept all stations aligned through ongoing reviews.

Design Approach

Understand and Design

Designing in Context

Before finalising the digital touchpoints, we co-developed experience ideas with the event team. Once aligned, we received materials to understand the environment where our touchpoints would live.
📍 Floorplan – for spatial flow

🎨 Zone visuals – for design alignment

🗂 Content outlines – for narrative planning

Design & Iterate

Nimble by Design

We designed flexible UI and layouts to accommodate shifting content and on-ground conditions. Our team tested in situ and iterated fast to ensure legibility and experience quality across varying screens and spaces.

Background of National Service, Zone 1

Interactive Kiosk, History of NS

The challenge
How might we design a touchpoint that engages visitors while delivering rich historical content?

Engaged visitors with a modular interface that blended micro-animations, bold visuals, and concise storytelling. Balanced rich historical content with intuitive exploration, resulting in a design that resonated across generations.

Web Augmented Reality, History of NS

The challenge
How might we make historical information more interactive and create experiential cadences in the space?

We identified physical artifacts and images that aligned with our content goals and used them to deepen engagement. Leveraging Web AR, we extended their stories beyond static displays, allowing visitors to interact with the space and explore the content hands-on.

Connect with National Service, Zone 1

Augmented Reality Uniform

The challenge
How might we create meaningful connections between visitors of all ages and experiences and National Service on a personal level?

The uniform is a key symbol of National Service men. Letting visitors virtually try it on creates a personal connection to their pride and stories.

In Appreciation, Zone 3

Pledge your Suppport

The challenge
How might we use this opportunity to honor and thank generations of NS men?

Our visitors include multiple generations of NS men and their families. To honor their legacy and foster heartfelt appreciation, we designed an inclusive experience where visitors of all ages send gratitude messages via tablets around a symbolic pillar, creating a shared moment of connection and thanks.

NEXUS: Your NS Moment

The challenge
How might we help Nexus collect National Service stories for National Education and Total Defence?

We created a personal video booth that allow NS men share memorable stories, both triumphs and challenges, preserving their voices in video and audio formats.

Reflection

Leading this project deepened my understanding of how design can bridge generations and make history personal. Although 3D and motion graphics were outside my core expertise, I stayed grounded with a clear plan and guided my designers to deliver in these areas. By working closely with them and stepping in to make onsite tweaks alongside developers, I ensured a seamless delivery.

The project’s success exceeded expectations, evolving from a side piece into the main exhibition for the Army Open House 2022 roving tour. This experience strengthened my adaptability, strategic mindset, and belief in creating meaningful, inclusive experiences that resonate well beyond the screen.
